Philes and phobias
It's a love-hate thing
Phobia: an extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something. Phile: a combining form denoting a person or thing having a fondness for a specified thing.
If you're reading this, you're probably a logophile (lover of words), and you're not alone – we're with you on that one. But there are many more philes and phobias out there, some extremely odd. Here's a list of some of the strangest we could find:
An obsessive fear of being without books. Similarly, bibliophilia is the love of books.
Fear of men. You guessed it, androphilia is the love of men.
Fear of dust.
Fear of all things English. If that's you, you should probably leave now.
Love of being alone.
Love of toads. Really, though? Ew.
Love of ugliness. But surely, if you love the ugly, doesn't it become beautiful? Beauty, after all, is in the eye of the beholder.
Fear of comets.
Fear of dining. (We absolutely cannot relate to that. We love dinner.)
Love of all things to the right. Probably not Beyoncé fans, then...
Love of being criticised. All in the name of self improvement, we assume.
Love of crossing bridges. (Of course, gephyrophobia is the fear of such things.)
Fear of sex.
Fear of feeling pleasure. (Who are these people?!)
Anyone who grew up in a Church of England school will understand this: fear of sermons. Damn, they were boring.
Fear of stooping. Not ideal for tall people or miners.
Love of fatigue. Is this just an excuse to sleep more?
Love of otters. Come on, who could say no to these?!
Love of being tied up. Whatever you're into...
Fear of change. Similarly, neophobia is fear of anything new.
Fear of nudity.
Fear of wet dreams. Though, to be more gender-inclusive, we should also mention oneirophobia, which is a general fear of dreams.
Love of the Pope. Who doesn't love the Pope?!
Love of bald people.
Fear of many things.
Fear of your in-laws. Don't we all have this? Similarly, syngeneaphobia is the fear of relatives. Now there's a way to get out of those awkward family Christmas lunches.
Love of sitting. Any excuse for a comfy seat...
An obsessive love of tyrants? Bizarre...
Fear of dryness. Bring me the moisturiser!
Love of foreign languages.
